The Path to Energy Enlightenment

August 26, 2015

If you’re anything like the average person, you don’t spend much time thinking about where your energy comes from.  When your phone battery is running low, you find the nearest outlet.  When your electricity bill comes at the end of the month, you begrudgingly pay it.  You just expect energy to be there.

We do however, think about mobile games. A LOT.  In fact 42 percent of Americans play mobile phone games for at least three hours per week.  That’s a lot of tapping. And what may be more surprising is that these players aren’t just Millennials;  the average game player is 35 years old.

This dichotomy of course shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.  Games are often fun and engaging and energy, well…let’s just say it isn’t slinging irate birds at little piggies.

Enter The Path to Luma™, a new game by NRG that helps bridge the divide between energy awareness and entertainment. The game hopes that by making energy options visual, accessible, easy to understand, and most of all fun, it will spark meaningful conversations around energy and sustainability.

The Game Backstory
According to The Path to Luma site, the alien civilization of Chroma is on the brink of catastrophe. Years ago, the Chroma inhabited many planets across a vast galaxy, each with its own unique resources and characteristics which were quickly depleted.  Using intuition, advanced technology, and an abundance of courage, the main character, SAM, analyzes the resources available and transforms the planet by implementing clean energy technologies so that the Chroma can restore their thriving communities.

Gameplay
The main gameplay of The Path to Luma centers around you navigating your main character, SAM, across a variety of obstacles and puzzles on a series of unique planets. As you navigate SAM, you unleash that world’s unique renewable energy power (like solar or wind) which is then used at the end of the level to heal the planet and restore it to all its natural glory.

Like many of today’s popular games, The Path to Luma takes place in a futuristic, dystopian kind of nightmare. But what sets The Path to Luma apart, is its ability to change and improve your environment based on your actions.  So in other games in which you try to just survive a zombie apocalypse or a futuristic robot invasion, The Path to Luma introduces a concept we don’t often see- hope. The ability to not only survive a hostile environment, but to evolve and change it.

The Path to Luma’s controls are simple and intuitive and even if you do get stuck there’s a guide that will help you.  The puzzles are challenging and the difficulty definitely increases as you progress, but the game never becomes frustrating  like many other puzzle games.

The music is simply beautiful and comes across as a fusion of ethereal, ambient sounds overlaid by classical strings. The peacefulness of the sound experience balances well with the complexity of the puzzles, helping players remain patient and engaged.

From Fun and Games to Clean Energy Understanding
Players of The Path to Luma won’t be immersed in all the complexities of clean energy and the game doesnt attempt to “teach” or “lecture” players.  And that’s ok.  The game merely aims to get the discussion started and raise people’s awareness of where their energy comes from in a fun and lighthearted way.

The Path to Luma illustrates what’s possible in the clean energy future. The technologies SAM uses in the game are actually modeled after real-world energy solutions. Solar power, wind power, battery storage, water and energy, waste-to-energy, and carbon capture are not solutions of the future. They are happening now, and poised to bring about a clean energy revolution during the span of our lifetimes.
